Our History

  • Assam Water Research and Management Institute was earlier known as River Research Station (RRS). The RRS was set up as a Research and Advisory Wing of Water Resources Department Assam in the year 1958. The institution was carrying out Research and Investigation in all diversified basic fields of Civil Engineering and earned the distinction of becoming the primary research organization of its kind in the whole North Eastern Region of India.

    The River Research Station was established at Byrnihat, about 26 KM away from Guwahati in the year 1958. The RRS was housed in a RCC framed building on G.S. Road in Byrnihat in the year 1961. The Research Station (RRS) was dealing with the problems relating to Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Concrete and Materials Testing, River Training, Flood control and Irrigation projects with the aid of Hydraulic Model Experimentation.

    The RRS was manned by an adequately qualified team of officers and staff having proper engineering and scientific background. The Journey of RRS started under the able leadership of Late Amarendra Nath Duttachoudhury , BE, CE, MSE (USA), MADU(USA) the first Director of RRS. The Director was supported by a team of dedicated and well experienced scientific staff and officers.

    After creation of Meghalaya State, the River Research Station was shifted to Guwahati in the year 1979 and continued its functioning in a new building and campus at Basistha about 6 km away from Dispur.

    The RRS functioned well till the mid nineties and a lot of work on investigation and physical modelling was conducted by this centre.

    The River Research Station got its importance and necessary recognization with the initiative taken by the then Additional Chief Secretary of Water Resources Department Sri Jitesh Khosla, IAS. In 2013, with an aim to establish a Centre of Excellence for Knowledge and Technology in the field of Water Resources Management in North East India, the River Research Station was converted to the Assam Water Research and Management Institute (AWRMI).

    To bring about structural change and to affect greater functional and financial autonomy to AWRMI so that it could be developed as a Centre of Excellence for Water Resources and river Management in the state, AWRMI was converted into “Assam Water Research and Management Institute Society (AWRMIS)” in April/2015.
