New Initiative

ASSAM FLOOD, EROSION AND RIVER MANAGEMENT MODERNIZATION PROJECT

OVERVIEW

A new initiative in the sector of Water Resources and Flood/Erosion Management will be taken up total financial outlayRs. 1500 Crores (to be finalized during project preparation) and will be funded by World Bank under International Development Association (IDA) Credit Financial Agreement. The entire Brahmaputra Basin is considered for this project having a project during of around 4 years spreading over a period from 2016-2020.

IMPLEMENTING AGENCY

Primary implementing agency: AWRMIS of Water Resources Department

Secondary implementing agencies and partner department: North East Space Application Centre(NESAC), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Science and research institutes specialized in remote sensing, geomorphological modeling, flood modeling and NGOs for community mobilizations.

Role of Central Government in implementation: Coordination and Technical Support to be provided through MoWR and to include representative from Central Water Commission, Brahmaputra Board etc.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

To adopt a river basin approach to develop a comprehensive flood management and erosion management proposal and planned for the entire Brahmaputra and Barak Basin including the main stem of the rivers and its tributaries, with a focus on how the flooding and erosion impacts in Assam could be ameliorated.

To help implement and integrated flood, erosion and sediment management plan with incorporation of global best designs and practices in the Brahmaputra- Barak basin in Assam.

To fill in the gaps in existing knowledge base of the Brahmaputra- Barak Basin, showcase the global best practices by the Water Resources Department in planning, design and implementation of projects.

To implement selected priority physical infrastructure interventions within the framework of an integrated flood, erosion and sediment management system for the Brahmaputra- Barak Basin in the State of Assam.
